With housing costs climbing and inventory tight, many people are choosing to invest in the properties they already have rather than move somewhere new. QS Supplies surveyed 1,000 homeowners and analysed thousands of kitchen and bathroom search queries and TikTok hashtags to find out which upgrades are most popular in 2026.
Key Findings
- 87% of homeowners would rather renovate their current home than move in today's housing market.
- Bathrooms are the priority room in 2026, with nearly half of renovating homeowners (47%) tackling a bathroom only, compared to 25% focusing on kitchens.
- 26% of renovators have scaled back their project scope due to rising costs, while 87% say higher costs have made them more selective about which upgrades they actually do.
- Organic Modern is the breakout kitchen aesthetic on TikTok, with 38,900 posts under the #organicmodern hashtag.
- "Smart kitchen appliances" is the fastest-growing kitchen search term in the past year (up 278%), while "frameless shower door" leads bathroom searches (up 59%).
- "Induction cooktop" is the most-searched kitchen term with 2.9M annual searches, and "bathroom vanity" leads bathroom searches at 3.1M.
Homeowners Are Staying Put and Renovating Instead
In a housing market defined by high mortgage rates and limited inventory, the calculus around buying versus upgrading has shifted in a meaningful way for most homeowners.
Most homeowners (87%) said they would rather renovate their current home than move in today's housing market. Bathrooms are the clear priority for 2026, with nearly half of renovating homeowners (47%) focusing exclusively on a bathroom project, compared to just 25% tackling a kitchen only.
Improving aesthetics is the top motivator for renovating, cited by 49% of respondents. The average kitchen renovation budget sits at £4,044 ($5,461), while the average bathroom budget is £2,368 ($3,198) for those focusing only on those rooms. That cost gap may partly explain why bathrooms are attracting more renovators this year.
Rising costs are affecting how homeowners approach their projects. More than a quarter of renovators (26%) have scaled back the scope of their plans, yet 51% said they are still willing to go over budget if they find the right upgrade.
New flooring leads all planned upgrades at 51% and also tops the list of upgrades homeowners consider most worth the money at 40%. Aesthetic updates, including paint, hardware, and backsplash, followed closely as the second most valued investment at 39%. Nearly half of homeowners (45%) are also looking to update their lighting or fixtures.
Kitchen Trends Online: What Homeowners Are Searching and Posting
Search volume and social media data show which kitchen trends have moved from inspiration to active intent, and which aesthetics are capturing the imagination of home renovators right now.
"Induction cooktop" is the most-searched kitchen term, generating 2.9 million searches from 2025 to 2026. "Smart kitchen appliances" is the fastest-growing kitchen search term, surging 278% in the past year. This signals that connected, tech-forward kitchen products are moving from novelty to mainstream consideration.
On TikTok, #kitchendesign leads all kitchen hashtags with 611,700 posts, establishing it as the dominant discovery tag for kitchen content on the platform. Amongst renovation-specific tags, #kitchenremodel drew 190,200 posts, and #kitchenrenovation followed with 166,700.
In terms of aesthetics, #organicmodern is the breakout kitchen style on TikTok with 38,900 posts, pulling ahead of #greenkitchen (7,850) and #cottagekitchen (7,685) to become the defining kitchen aesthetic of this renovation cycle.
Bathroom Trends Taking Over Search and Social
Bathroom search and social data confirm that consumer interest in bathroom upgrades is accelerating fast.
"Bathroom vanity" is the most-searched bathroom term this year, with 3.1 million annual searches, followed by "bathroom remodel" at 2.3 million. "Frameless shower door" is the fastest-growing bathroom search term, up 59% in the past year, pointing to growing demand for clean, minimalist shower designs.
"Soaking tub" searches rose 40% in the past year, and "freestanding bathtub" searches climbed 42%. This means there's a strong and growing appetite for spa-inspired bathroom features amongst homeowners.
On TikTok, #bathroommakeover tops all bathroom hashtags with 373,600 posts, followed by #bathroomdesign (258,300) and #bathroomremodel (215,600). The luxury aesthetic is well represented, with #luxurybathroom ranking as the top aesthetic-specific bathroom tag, with 42,200 posts. Amongst feature-specific tags, #walkinshower (7,253), #wetroom (6,620), and #freestandingtub (3,031) are the most active.
The Upgrade Mindset Is Here to Stay
The housing market may have pushed homeowners into this position, but the data suggests most aren't unhappy about it. Staying put and upgrading is starting to look less like a compromise and more like the smarter move.
And the search trends and social activity around kitchens and bathrooms suggest that enthusiasm for the process itself is only growing. When you're ready to get started, take a look at the QS Supplies bathroom and kitchen options to find just what your project needs.
Methodology
To understand renovation intentions, budgets, and priorities in 2026, QS Supplies surveyed 1,000 US homeowners in April 2026. Respondents were screened to ensure that all participants were adults aged 18 or older. Survey findings on renovation plans, budgets, upgrade priorities, and motivations are reported amongst the 487 respondents who indicated they are actively planning a kitchen or bathroom renovation in 2026.
For the online search analysis, we compiled bathroom- and kitchen-related keyword search volume data from Google Trends, reflecting 2025-2026 US search volume for the tracked terms. Year-over-year growth figures reflect the change in total annual search volume between 2024 and 2025.
TikTok post counts were collected via platform search in April 2026 and reflect the number of posts associated with each hashtag at that time. All search and TikTok findings are limited to the terms analyzed and are not representative of all kitchen or bathroom search activity.
