Masnory Drill Bits

Masnory Drill BitMasnory Drill Bits

As the name suggests, these are designed for drilling into brick, block, stone, quarry tiles or concrete. The cutting tip is made from tungsten carbide bonded to a spiralled steel shaft. They are usually used in a power drill; although they can be used with a lot of effort in a hand brace. Most masonry bits can be used with a hammer action power drill, but always check as the action is quite punishing on the bit and cheaper bits have been known to shatter when subjected to the pounding. Always use a slow rotational speed for drilling into harder materials to avoid overheating of the tip, and frequently withdraw the bit to remove dust.

Long Masonry bits (300 to 400mm) are available for drilling through masonry walls. Bit sizes range from 4 to 16mm. Sharpening - use a drill sharpener or grindstone to sharpen the tungsten carbide tip.

HSS Drill Bits, Wood Drill Bits, Cobalt Drill Bits, Masnory Drill Bits, SDS Drill Bits and other drill bits can be purchased online.

Drill Bits Tip

Drill Bits Tip

Our House has frequently mentioned the importance of pre-drilling nail holes to prevent wood splitting. However, if you break the drill bit halfway through a job and you haven't got a spare, here's a tip.

If your bit gets broken before you finish the job, simply cut the head off a nail with a pair of pliers, put it into the drill, and away you go. Perfect for soft wood, it will also go through hard wood, although you might get a bit of burn in the wood when you try to push the nail through. This tip is really for jobs using 2-3mm nails and shouldn't be applied to larger nails, but at least it will get you out of some fixes..
