Guide about first aid

Every home and business should keep a first aid kit on hand that contains essential first aid supplies to be used in case of medical emergency, whether small or large. First aid kits should be kept in the car as well and taken on any trips when leaving the home or office, for example when going on a camping trip or when doing fieldwork out of the office.

First aid kits should be stored in an easily accessible location out of reach of small children, and everyone in the office or the home should know where the first aid kit is located. First aid kits should be examined every three to six months to make sure any first aid supplies have not expired. If medications or other supplies have expired be sure to replace them promptly.

What are First Aid Supplies?

You can buy first aid kits complete with first aid supplies or you can make your own first aid kit and buy first aid supplies at the local pharmacy. First aid supplies can be divided into basic supplies, medications, and emergency supplies.

The well-stocked first aid kit should contain a number of basic items including a first aid manual that covers common medical situations, a thermometer, band-aids in various sizes, gauze bandages (squares and rolls) in several sizes, adhesive tape, an ace bandage, antiseptic towelettes for wound cleansing, hand sanitizer, a pair of small sharp scissors, tweezers, a needle, safety pins in several sizes, bulb syringe, cotton balls and swabs, petroleum jelly, tongue depressor, saline solution for eyes and nose, several pairs of latex gloves, several ice packs, a medicine syringe, spoon, or medicine cup.

Medications that should be part of the first aid supplies in the first aid kit include Benadryl or an equivalent antihistamine, anti-diarrhea medicines, activated charcoal, hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion, antibiotic ointment, antacids, laxatives, aspirin and non-aspirin pain relievers such as Advil or Tylenol, and any prescribed medications for bee stings or personal use.

Emergency supplies include such things as a small flashlight and batteries, matches, candles, sunscreen, thermal blanket, cellular phone with re-charger, and emergency phone numbers such as contact person, family physician, poison control center, and a list of allergies to medications or special medical conditions.

How to use First Aid Supplies

Everyone at a place of business or in the household (including children old enough to understand) should be familiar with the first aid supplies contained in the first aid kit and know how to use them. Many communities offer first aid classes on a regular basis for those who want to learn more or to brush up on their skills.
